The border economy

What equipment do Texas border lenders and owners need appraised?

Laredo is the busiest land port on the US-Mexico border, and the Rio Grande Valley and El Paso carry much of the rest. The equipment behind that trade is tractors and trailers, yard trucks and forklifts, cold storage, and the twin plants that run a US side and a Mexican side under one owner. Around it sit the contractors, body shops, farms and food processors of South Texas.

A lot of that equipment is owned by family companies that run in Spanish, financed by Texas community banks, SBA lenders and CDFIs, and titled to entities on both sides of the river.

  • Trucking and logistics fleets: tractors, trailers, reefers and yard equipment, valued unit by unit
  • Twin plants: a Texas facility and a Mexican plant under one owner
  • SBA and CDFI collateral: contractors, landscapers, auto and collision shops, restaurants
  • Buy-sell and partner splits: FMV for a family fleet or a shop changing hands
  • Disputes: truck total-loss appraisal clauses, partnership and divorce matters (litigation support)

The site visit

Why does it matter that the appraiser speaks Spanish?

Much of a fleet's value comes out of the yard conversation: real miles and hours, engine and transmission work, which units are owned and which are leased, which are titled in Texas and which in Mexico. On a border fleet that conversation often happens in Spanish, with the owner and with the shop foreman. The appraiser who signs the report takes part directly, with no interpreter in between.

Common questions

Answers, up front.

Do you appraise trucking fleets in Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley?

Yes. We appraise tractors, trailers, reefer units and yard equipment unit by unit, on site, for lenders, lessors, buyers and owners in Laredo, McAllen, Brownsville, Harlingen and the rest of the Valley. The owner interview and the inspection can be done in Spanish.

Can you appraise a fleet with trucks titled in both Texas and Mexico?

Yes. The report identifies each unit, where it is titled and where it was inspected, and values it under the premise the intended user needs. Units located in Mexico are inspected there or, where the assignment allows, appraised from records and photographs.

Will an SBA lender in South Texas accept your appraisal?

Yes. Reports are USPAP-compliant and prepared by a NEBB-certified Machinery & Equipment Appraiser (CMEA), the standard SBA lenders and their credit reviewers expect for equipment collateral.

Do you charge separately for travel to Laredo or El Paso?

No. Travel is inside the quoted fee. Nothing separate for mileage, airfare or per diem.
